Interview with Lee Shargel

Author of The Christmas Siren

 

Where are you from originally and where do you reside now?

The Bronx, NY and I now reside in Largo, Florida.

If you currently reside somewhere besides where you were born, what’s the story that lead from there to here?

My story has taken me around the world from my birthplace in the Bronx to the gorgeous beach in Clearwater, Florida. I began as an amateur screenwriter and filmmaker at the age of 12 years. Writing and shooting short films all over the city. After high school as an ROTC grad I went to college in Florida and the state became a part of me and I was destined to return again and again. After graduation I became an officer in the U.S. Navy Silent Service. I served as a weapons officer on 2 nuclear submarines. From the Bronx to Southeast Asia to the Arctic and the beautiful desolation of the Mojave desert. After the Navy I was discharged in Florida where I went to work as a medical device enigineer for a large medical products company. As luck would have it, a good friend called me and asked if I could lend my engineering expertise to a robotic device he was building. I said yes and as it turned out I was helping develop the Mother alien for the movie Aliens. My journey as an author began with being chosen to be the north american feature writer for Sci-and Fantasy magazine. From there I wrote my first sci-fi novel, Voice in the Mirror, which was a best-seller. From there I ventured full time into the film business writing and directing. My next book, The Christmas Siren, was also a big feature for me. It is now being considered for a feature film Titled “Ladder 123.”. My next book, U.S.S. Shark is a definite edge of your seat thriller which I also wrote the screenplay. Writing is in my blood and I am looking forward to my next BIG break.

What made you decide to write and publish your first book?

My friend and teacher, author Robert W. Walker told me what to do to get my book published, I took his advice and found a publisher. When I sent the galley proof to Dr. Carl Sagan, he stated that it was a fabulous read and would make a great movie.

How would you describe your books to first time readers?

If you enjoy the prospect of other worlds in a sci-fi novel that can take you “Where No One has Gone Before.: You will love the adventure of Voice In The Mirror. If you enjoy the turmoil found in a struggle for justice, you’ll love The Christmas Siren. If yu are fascinated with the history of the movies, you’ll like “100 Years of Moving Pictures.” Comng soon, “Shark. Filled with action and suspense.

Who do you feel is most likely to connect with the topics you write about?

Everyone who enjoys a good read.

What unexpected or surprising thing did you learn during the process of writing and publishing?

It is a tough game. You need to believe in yourself and the words. Don’t be swayed by rejection. I had enough slips to wallpaper my house, but, I persevered. I still do.

If you could, what advice would you give to your past self before embarking on this journey?

Never go into this for fame and fortune. If you love to write and you have a story to tell, tell it. Learn the written language. Don’t be afraid, just do it.

How many people would you ideally like to reach with your books?

Millions!

What has been the biggest challenge and frustration during the process to date?

Dealing with publishers, managers and agents.

What’s your biggest strengths when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?

My telling a compelling story, selling my words, and myself.

What’s your biggest weakness when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?

Grammar! Syntax and writing, rewriting, rewriting….

When do you think you will write your next book?

I’m writing it right now.

Are you self published or did you use a hybrid publisher, or a traditional publisher?

All of the above.
