Interview with Joan Kenny
Author of A Snake At My Shoulder
Where are you from originally and where do you reside now?
Born in Belfast n Ireland, grew up in Canada spent 20 yrs in England and Holland
Now reside in Whitby Ontario Canada
If you currently reside somewhere besides where you were born, what’s the story that lead from there to here?
I have always had wanderlust and have lived all over Canada as well as Europe. I am pretty settled down now, my husband and horse keep me from wandering too long or far!
What made you decide to write and publish your first book?
I have always written and thrown away what I wrote because I was learning to write, now I know how. This story is about survival and tenacity both of which I am familiar, it deserves to be told.
How would you describe your books to first time readers?
My books are full of detail that make the characters and story pop into real life. With a touch of humour to lighten the mood.
Who do you feel is most likely to connect with the topics you write about?
Anyone with a natural curiosity about life and experiences would enjoy my books.
What unexpected or surprising thing did you learn during the process of writing and publishing?
Writing was pure pleasure, publishing is hard work. Because you have written the book now you have to sell it! I am not a natural sales person.
If you could, what advice would you give to your past self before embarking on this journey?
Just do it and don’t throw away all that you wrote while “learning” to write there are some valuable stories and characters there.
How many people would you ideally like to reach with your books?
I would like to reach as many people who had trauma in their lives as possible.
What has been the biggest challenge and frustration during the process to date?
My biggest challenge was taking the courage to get the book published, then the frustration of actually trying to sell it!
What’s your biggest strengths when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?
I am an excellent writer full of stories and a vivid imagination. I am well into my next book which is just as gripping as A Snake At My Shoulder, it is called About The Barn.
What’s your biggest weakness when it comes to book a) writing, b) publishing and c) marketing?
My biggest weakness is the marketing as I said earlier I am not a sales person and I don’t know where to start and what to do.
When do you think you will write your next book?
My next book will be done in June 2022.
Are you self published or did you use a hybrid publisher, or a traditional publisher?
I am self published.
Worrying if I was telling too many secrets Leaving out so much.Keep Reading »
